The Met Gala

The Met Gala

On Monday evening, I had the goosebump Silver Lined experience of attending the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala (a/k/a the Met Gala) in New York. The Met Gala is an annual event that launches the Costume Institute spring exhibition. The Costume Institute is a very special place that “houses a collection of more than thirty-five thousand costumes and accessories, representing five continents and seven centuries of fashionable dress, regional costumes, and accessories for men, women, and children, from the fifteenth century to the present.” The Met Gala, or Met Ball as it is also called, has a theme that goes with the exhibition, and antendees usually incorporate the theme with their outfits. The event raises money for the Met’s Costume InstituteEach year the Gala celebrates a new exhibit. This year’s exhibition is PUNK: Chaos to Couture. With over 100 pieces, this exhibit examines “punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early 1970s through …

Vogue and Carey Mulligan

Vogue and Carey Mulligan

This spring, I’m super excited about the soon-to-be-released 3-D film, The Great Gatsby. I mean, really, how cool is it that it is in 3-D? Vogue is also clearly looking forward to the film as well because they put Carey Mulligan, one of the film’s esteemed stars, on the cover of the May Issue. In the film, Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan, the sixteen-year-old Chicago debutante with whom Fitzgerald first fell in love and who gave him the outline for so many of the women in his writing. The fashion is going to be as jaw dropping as the acting and film direction because Miuccia Prada created more than 40 looks for the movie! The Great Gatsby release date is May 10th. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I plan to!

Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly Pulitzer

It is with a heavy heart that I heard about the death of Lilly Pulitzer.  What an incredible, inspiring woman. In 1959, as a housewife with a whole lot of creativity and time on her hands, she opened a juice stand. To camouflage the fruit stains, she commissioned dresses in colorful prints. Very shortly thereafter, those dresses outsold her drinks. I’ve loved Lilly (as so many of us fondly refer to her) for as long as I can remember. I remember my first Lilly dress that I bought in high school after a whole lot of babysitting.  Boy oh boy do I ever wish that I still had that dress! I’m thrilled that Suddenly Seven has adopted my passion for the bright, happy florals. In fact, 4 days out of 7, she is in a Lilly dress. Thank you for bringing us such joy and beauty, dear Lilly Pulitzer. You …

Cuckoo for Coconut Oil

Cuckoo for Coconut Oil

I’ve always been a big fan of Coconut Oil.  Over the past few years, I’ve started using it liberally – in both my kitchen and in my bathroom.  I wasn’t exactly Einstein, but was definitely on to something.  Turns out that Coconut Oil has proven to be a major Silver Lining that has gobs of health and beauty benefits!  Hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!

Spring Fashion Magazines

Spring Fashion Magazines

So so so excited for the ginormous spring fashion books to arrive on the newsstands. Though these are the ones that are really heavy and awkward and hard to carry, I love-love-love them. I read them methodically. First, I skim every page. Even if I want to read an article, I don’t.  I keep going. Only then do I go back and read (pretty much) every word, front to back. I don’t skip. I only read the March issues this way, thankfully! Hee! Hee! Michelle Obama is on the cover of the March issue of Vogue and I am super excited to get a nice cup of matcha tea and sit down for a nice, long read.

Savoir Faire: The Making of a Chanel Couture Gown

The fabulous fashion of the Academy Awards has motivated me to share this amazing video illustrating the making of a Chanel Couture gown. Couture literally refers to the design and production of custom made garments. Though I’ve never owned a piece of couture, a couple of years ago I had the outrageously magnificent opportunity to tour the Chanel showrooms in Paris. Oh dear heavens was it ever a Silver Lining experience and I’m still pinching myself over the experience. I hope that you enjoy this short film as much as I do!

Oscar Fashion Drool

Oscar Fashion Drool

Though the Oscars is a really fun show (no matter how well the host hosts!), my favorite part is the Red Carpet Arrivals. I know that I’m in good company, though I don’t know how many people actually admit it. Do you? Speaking of the show, how fabulous was Charlize Theron’s opening dance? Oh! And what about the Les Mis performance? And Adele? I mean, really. And yaaaaah for Anne Hathaway. What a great speech she gave. It’s all so much fun! Below are my favorite outfits. What are yours? Anne Hathaway in Prada Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta Jennifer Garner in Gucci Charlize Theron in Dior Sally Field in “I-don’t-know-who-but-doesn’t-she-look-amazing?” Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton Jennifer Aniston in Valentino What a fun, Silver Lined night!  Hope you had fun!

Welcome to Santa Barbara

Welcome to Santa Barbara

This month, I am incredibly honored to be included in Santa Barbara Magazine‘s Best of 2013 issue. Santa Barbara Magazine has always been one of my absolute favorite periodicals, so having the opportunity to be a part of it and share some of my favorite things to do in my favorite town is a major Silver Lining! This issue happens to be one of my favorite of the year. The magazine is divided so beautifully into well organized and easily accessible sections, including Home, Garden, Entertaining, Food & Wine, Sports, Kids, The Arts, Getaways, Out & About and finally, The Reason We Live Here (which, if you’ve ever been here, you definitely knowwwww!). This issue will make you go ahead and commit to making a reservation to visit. And fair warning, when you’re here, you’ll try every which way to figure out how to stay longer (or even move here, which …

The New York Experience

The New York Experience

I write this on my way home from New York after what can only be described as a quintessential New York experience. I’m still pinching myself, actually. I have never been one to take things in life for granted. Additionally, my hospice work taught me that nothing (including tomorrow) is guaranteed. Here’s the thing, post-FBC is I have a newfound, palpable delight in the excitement that can be found in everyday life, from the unique color of a morning sunrise to unplanned circumstances that I could never have imagined. I was certainly reminded of that on this trip. The reason for the trip was to have meetings for an exciting new project & path on which I am embarking. I’ll tell you about it asap. However, the Silver Lining was that I was able to add the 3 F’s to the trip: Friends, Fun and Fashion. The trip began with a …

The Lovely Lee Radziwill

The Lovely Lee Radziwill

One of my favorite periodicals is T Magazine. Under the new leadership of Deborah Needleman (formerly of the WSJ) she has Lee Radziwill, photographed in her Paris apartment by Francois Halard, on her debut cover. Here is a sneak peak of some of the lovely images. For a little more eye candy and Silver Linings, a fabulous article and even a video interview, be sure to pop over to T Magazine!   The view from Lee Radzwill’s terrace. Pas mal, non? Can’t wait to see the full article…in print!
