Because I’m not doing any cooking this week thanks to our holiday week, I thought I’d share a great foodie experience that we had at Flora Farm in San Jose del Cabo. Wowsy. Bowsy. What an unexpected Silver Lining of our trip THAT was!
Flora Farm is a magnificent ten-acre organic farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. The road to get there is filled with ginormous bumps and “turbulence” as Suddenly Seven described our ride. However, what we learned is that taking the road less traveled can indeed produce magnificent Silver Linings!
Patrick and Gloria Greene began ten years ago by founding the Farmers Market and expanded to grow for Floras Field Kitchen, Floras Grocery and the recent Culinary Cottage owners. Farming without pesticides or using genetically modified seeds and working the farm largely by hand yields over 100 varieties of heirloom vegetables and herbs. They are absolutely spectacular.
The philosophy of Flora Field is to create handmade food utilizing their own farm fresh ingredients. Their goal is “to create a healthy family meal with a sense of place.” How’s that for fabulous? Working day begins at four am in the bakery when Jose arrives to fire the wood oven. Oh my gosh. Can I just talk about the BREAD? Holy Moly. Choices include pain l’ancienne baguettes, ciabatta, sourdough, focaccia, whole wheat and herb breads. I’d have to say that the herb breads were my fave.
The menu changes with the seasons. I love it when restaurants prepare food this way. The Silver Lining is that it is gentler on the environment. Food is served family style, which is always my favorite way to eat because you get to taste a little bit of everything. I especially loved the radish appetizer (I know, an acquired taste), tofu meatballs and the pizza. Oh the pizza. The HOTY had chicken (also grown on the farm) and Suddenly Seven had delish pasta.
Suddenly Seven had a great time, meeting lots of new friends and eating intermittently between games on the expansive lawn. Talk about the perfect childhood dining experience. I mean, really.
There is a spectacular place for private parties and there is live music on the weekends. Reservations are, by all accounts, necessary. If you find yourself in this part of the world, please don’t miss this wonderful dining experience!
